LONG RANGE COURSE

about this course

Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems Long Range Certificate is applicable to non-SOLAS vessels operating beyond the range of VHF where long range communication is essential.

In broad terms, the contents of this course seek to impart knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to operate GMDSS long range Maritime Mobile Services, Maritime Mobile Satellite Services equipment and their subsystems. The content also elucidates maritime communication statutes governing the use of such equipment. This includes but not limited to the protocol as well as chronological procedure for distress, urgency, safety and routine communication.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority lists the mandatory minimum training requirements for seafarers. Therefore, the contents of this course are based on the syllabus prescribed by the SA Maritime Qualifications Code contained in the GOP 540.01.

Requirements

In order to enrol on the Long Range Certificate course, learners should be 18 years of age or older.

Good working knowledge of English is a prerequisite.

The course scope requires minimal insight into maritime radio communication practices.

Elementary computer skills will be an advantage to learners since practical training is computer based but such skills are by no means a prerequisite.

Course Duration

The course is scheduled for a total of five (5) days. The fifth day is mainly set aside for both theoretical and practical assessments.

Each day of instruction is divided into four (4) hours of theory and four (4) hours of practical tuition, which makes a total of eight (8) hours per day. Since the course is scheduled for five days, a total of 17 hours would be spent on theory and another 16 hours on practical sessions.

During each practical session learners are given individual attention and hands-on training in operating the GMDSS equipment. This includes coaching procedures and applications of regulations as well as statutes governing maritime communication.

Furthermore, the facilitator avails himself from 16:00 until 18:00 for tutorial sessions with learners who experience challenges in comprehending concepts and procedures.
