In order to enrol on the Short Range Course, learners should be 18 years of age or older.
Good working knowledge of English (as a second language) is a prerequisite.
The course scope requires minimal insight into maritime radio communication practices.
Elementary computer skills will be an advantage to learners since practical training is computer based but such skills are by no means a prerequisite.
Competence will be evaluated on continuous assessment and on completion of each module of the course candidates will be issued with a certificate which will be numbered for reference.
A minimum of 6 candidates are required and the course fee includes refreshments, notes and sundry materials, a light lunch, and transport to and from practical training exercises.
Candidates are to bring along their ID/Passport and valid medical fitness certificate on the 1st day of the course.
All candidates must be conversant and literate in English.
On successful completion of this course, candidates should be able to demonstrate the following competencies::
- Knowledge of the basic features of the Maritime Mobile Services.
- Detailed practical knowledge and ability to use the basic VHF ship station equipment.
- Detailed practical knowledge and ability to use the GMDSS VHF system and sub systems.
- Miscellaneous skills and operational procedures for general communication.
